Dishwashers live a hard life: hot water, detergent, food debris, repeated pump cycles and a damp environment all meet in one cabinet. The surprising part is not that things wear out, but that a well-designed machine can repeat that process thousands of times.
About 9 to 10 years is a realistic planning life. The NAHB study lists nine years, PNNL summarizes a wider 7-to-12-year range from multiple sources, and Consumer Reports says most of the manufacturers it asked put expected life at about ten years. Real homes, however, produce a very wide distribution of outcomes.
